William Schmugge

William Charles “Bill” Schmugge, 86 of Cannon Falls and formerly of St. Paul, passed April 20, 2022, at his residence at Cannon Rivers Senior Living. Bill was born to Fred and Frieda (Lange) Schmugge on May 25, 1935, the eleventh of twelve children. He graduated in 1953 from Murray High School in St. Paul. Bill married Marlene Ann Kaufhold of Roseville, MN on May 21, 1955, having 46 years together (Marlene 1936-2002). On January 3, 2004, Bill married Elvena (Sundheim) Penfield of Cannon Falls. Bill and Elvena celebrated 18 years together.

Bill was a retired operating engineer of Local 49 for Great Lakes Coal and Dock. After retiring, he enjoyed being a parking marshal at the Minnesota State Capitol. He enjoyed golfing, baseball, gardening, feeding the birds (especially bluebirds), traveling, and wintering with Elvena in Florida.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene in 2002; parents, Fred and Frieda Schmugge; parents-in-law, Fred and Hilda Kaufhold; siblings, Marcella (Edwin) Voss, Reuben (Norma), Frederick (Doris), Arthur (Maxine), Dorothy (Leland) Lindholm, Lorraine, Betty (Donald) Crossfield, an infant brother, Robert (Phyllis), and Loren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald (Ethelreda) Kaufhold, Robert Kaufhold, Carol Vittum, Arlene (Jerry) Sachs, Betty (Lee) Hanson, Gary (Lillian) Sundheim, and Joey Sundheim; and grandson, Jackson Cowdrey.

He is survived by his wife, Elvena; Bill’s children, Michael (former daughter-in-law, Deborah “DJ”), Joseph, Becky (Ted) Stuckmayer, Kristina (David) Greene, and William (Sandra); 14 grandchildren, Christopher Pomeleo, William (Camille) Greene, Daniel (Stephanie) Greene, Jonathan (Korma) Aguh-Stuckmayer, Joseph (Elyssa) Schmugge, James (Michelle) Schmugge, Josiah Stuckmayer, Robert Greene, Ian (Mashayla) Finley, Marlena (Ryan) Halverson, Julia Stuckmayer, Meredith Greene, Claudia Schmugge (special friend, Noah Brenny) and Matthew Schmugge; 8 great-grandchildren, Adalyn, Titus, Estelle, Maia, Isabella, Asher, Naomi, and Ava; sister, Luanne Tollefson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nancy Schmugge, Kenneth (Mary) Kaufhold, Don (Darlene) Sundheim, Rod (Barb) Sundheim, Rosemary (Pat) Slevin, and Stephanie Sundheim; step children, Marie Sachs, Marcia Proud, Cindy (Frank) Smith, Connie (Larry) Self, and Kristel Cowdrey; 12 step grandchildren and 21 step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 25 at 11am, with visitation from 10-11am, at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 30289 59th Ave Way, Cannon Falls, with Pastor Keith Schreiner officiating. This service will be live-streamed and available to view at www.LundbergFuneral.com under Bill’s obituary.  A light lunch will follow. Interment will be at 2:30pm at Sunset Memorial Park, 2250 St. Anthony Blvd NE, Minneapolis, MN.
