Ruth Emma Vivian (nee Erickson) Miller Sauter was born at home in Cannon Falls Township on May 23, 1910, the youngest of seven children to Anton and Ida (Rehn) Erickson. She attended country school in District 137. As a young girl she did housework and cared for babies and toddlers for different farm families. She later went to Minneapolis and worked at G & K Cleaners with her sister, Alice. She returned to Cannon Falls and married Carl “Fredolph” Miller on June 10, 1933. In September, 1933 Fredolph contracted polio and was handicapped for 11 years. A son, Carl was born on June 27, 1937 and a daughter, Nancy on January 9, 1944. Fredolph died on March 1, 1945. For two and a half years, Ruth took in boarders to suppport herself and her children.
In 1946 she met Jean Sauter and they were married on August 22, 1947. During their marriage they moved several times because of Jean’s ill health. After about 19 moves, her final residence was at Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Ruth had several jobs over the years working again at a dry cleaner, running a country store, working as a cook at the Cannon Falls School, and finally, sewing and pressing samples at Kid Duds in Farmington and later in Cannon Falls. She retired in 1975. Jean passed away on February 17, 1997.
She pressed numerous wedding dresses over the years for family and friends. She pressed her last one for her granddaughter, Barb in 1998 at the age of 88. She loved to knit, crochet, embroider, cook, bake, go fishing and travel. She also loved playing games and always liked to win! She was a member of St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where she was involved in the Ruth unit.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Alice Melby, Ethel Vessels and Lindes Haggstrom; three brothers, Paul, Bertil and Evald Erickson; her husbands, Fredolph and Jean; and two grandsons, Lowell and Steven Miller.
She is survived by her son, Carl (Joyce) Miller of Lakeview, Arkansas; daughter, Nancy (Bruce) Braaten of Apple Valley; four grandchildren, Brian Miller, David (Nancy) Miller, Robert (Tammy) Braaten, and Barbra (Jeff) Merwin; nine great-grandchildren, Nicholas Miller, Megan, Emily and Daniel Miller, Jordan, Kaetlyn and Matthew Braaten, Isabella and Max Merwin; and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth died at the age of 99 years on Wednesday evening, August 26, 2009 at the Angels Care Center, where she has resided the past four years. She loved her family and friends, and enjoyed spending time with them. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Gary Schulz and Pastor Carol Sinykin officiating. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Saturday from 1-2 p.m.
Memorials are preferred to the Angels Care Center.
Active pallbearers will be Robert Braaten, Brian and David Miller, Richard Miller, Michael Erickson and Ronald Sauter. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
