Roy Allen Johnson passed away unexpectedly in his home April17, 2025.
He was born in Red Wing to Arnold and Nina Johnson. He grew up in Vasa on his family horse farm. He graduated from Red Wing High School, got a Masters degree from the U of M, and served his country in the Army Reserves.
Roy was a first-class equestrian and active member of the equine industry for 60 years. He started competing in open horse shows as a young boy, continuing to train and compete into adulthood. From 1975 to 1992, Roy was an instructor and Assistant Professor of Animal Production at the U of M Waseca. There, he was responsible for developing the Horse Management Program. It was one of the most successful two-year programs in the Midwest. In 1993, Roy began his work at Cargill Animal Nutrition, most recently as the Equine Development Manager. He developed several proprietary equine nutrition models with 2 US patents. Roy is a widely recognized, long-term member of the horse industry who made significant contributions as competitor, academic, judge, educator, youth supporter, volunteer and industry advocate. Roy will be remembered for his philanthropy as he supported a number of causes dear to his heart, including FFA, U of M, Farmamerica, and many other youth and educational programs.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Lyle, and Dale Johnson, and brother-in-law Thomas Nelson. He is survived by 2 sisters Sharon Nelson and Janet(Merle) Larson, and 11 nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Roy's Life will be held at a future time.
