Rose Joan Nygaard, age 82 of Cannon Falls, died on Friday morning, October 9, 2009 at the Kenyon Sunset Home, where she has resided the past six years.
Rose was born on November 24, 1926 in Leon Township, the daughter of Joseph and Randie (Ohnstad) Nelson. She grew up in the Aspelund Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed.
Rose married Kenneth P. Nygaard on June 7, 1947, and they raised a family of nine children. They farmed in the Wastedo area of Leon Township.
Rose was a longtime active member of Urland Lutheran Church, where she was involved with most of the church activities. She taught confirmation classes and Sunday school for over 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth on July 15, 2003; daughter, Donna Lundell; and brothers, Arnold and Wallace Nelson.
She is survived by her children, Diane (Gary) Ashling of Dawson, MN, Betty (Marshall) Peterson of Lakeville, Shirley (Mark) Harding of Spearfish, SD, John (Martha) of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Dennis (Virginia) of Hastings, Thomas (Rochelle) of Goodhue, Jerry (Lisa) of Richfield, and Paul of Dennison; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sister and brothers, Mavis Nelson of Arizona, Clifford (Ruthann) Nelson of Cannon Falls, and John (Barb) Nelson of Wanamingo; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Janice Nelson of Cannon Falls, Joy Nygaard of Red Wing, and Richard Gustafson of Red Wing; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Urland Lutheran Church, 6940 Co 9 Blvd, Cannon Falls, with Pastor Arthur Sharot officiating. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 29 at the Lundberg Funeral Home, 5839 Hwy 19 Blvd. in Cannon Falls where there will be a 6:30 p.m. prayer service and after 10:00 a.m. Friday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel Bible Camp or the Urland Lutheran Church Youth Projects.
