Roger Joseph Hinrichs, age 82 of Randolph, died on Friday evening, January 2, 2015 at The Reflections in Northfield. Roger was born in Butterfield Township, MN, the son of Ubbe and Julia (Lunz) Hinrichs. He was raised in the Butterfield and St. James areas of Minnesota and was a graduate of St. James High School. He served in the 523 Pipeline Company for the US Army during the Korean Conflict from December, 1952 until his honorable discharge in October, 1954. His marriage to Barbara Scheibel took place July 19, 1958 in Searles, MN. Roger was a farmer, auctioneer and sold livestock until moving to the Cannon Falls area in 1985. He then continued in sales of welding supplies and returned to trailer sales for Twin City Featherlite in Elko until retiring in 2012 at age 80. He was a gifted horseman. Roger owned and showed Quarter Horses and Ponies of the Americas. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren show horses at many local, state and national shows and rodeos. He was a state director for Minnesota High School Rodeo. Hobbies in his retirement included travel to major livestock shows and rodeos, and when travel was not possible he kept up with his sport on television. Even though he competed in bull riding in his younger years, he was most intrigued with tie-down calf roping. He was a member of Nelson-Scofield VFW Post 4452 and attended annual army reunions until his health declined. He also appreciated having his four grandchildren close to his home and was quite proud to see them grow into young adults. Roger is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara; son, Steve (Brenda) of Elko; daughters, Kathy (Mike) Sylvester of Stacy and Nancy (Robert) Haight of Cannon Falls; grandchildren, Tyler and Trent Hinrichs, Leah and Luke Sylvester; sister, Lois Sawatzky of St. James; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Maxine Rettke, Ruth Schroeder and Vera Bohlmann; nieces, nephews, friends and associates. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8 from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 9 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10-11 a.m. at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, Tyler and Trent Hinrichs, Leah and Luke Sylvester. Interment with military honors will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
