Robert J. “Bob” McCoy Sr., age 85 of Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday morning, March 10, 2009 at the Fairview Red Wing Medical Center.
Bob was born on August 2, 1923 in Hastings, the son of William E. and Margaret (Zusan) McCoy. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1941.
He married Rosella M. Gergen on June 7, 1944 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Trier.
Bob had served from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1947 with the US Army in Italy during WWII. He had worked for Cudahy’s Meat Packing Plant in Newport for a time. Bob and Rosella began farming in Washington County, during which time he was recognized by the County for his outstanding practices in soil conservation by means of contour farming. In 1954, they moved to Douglas Township near Cannon Falls and continued dairy farming until their retirement in 1986.
He was a longtime and active advocate for the farming community, and was a member of the Farmers Union, serving as president of the Dakota County Farmer’s Union for many years. He was also a board member of the Twin City Milk Producers Association. Bob had also served on the Douglas Township Planning Commission for many years.
They were longtime members of the St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in New Trier, where he had served as lector and usher, and was also active in the St. Nicholas Society, and the Fr. Paul Judge Knights of Columbus Council #4481 of Cannon Falls.
Upon retiring, Bob and Rosella moved from the farm to Cannon Falls in 1986, where they joined the St. Pius V Catholic Parish.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman, and loved to hunt, fish and camp. He will be remembered most for his love of his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosella on January 8, 1992; son, Ronald “Ron” McCoy; and sisters and brothers, Lucille McCoy, Martin McCoy, Sr. Lurlien McCoy OLVM, Myrtle McCoy, Eleanor “Ellie” McCoy, Earl McCoy, and Rita Maczko.
He is survived by his children, Raymond (Sandra) of Hastings, Jeanne McCoy of Ellsworth, WI, Bob Jr. (Brenda) of Cannon Falls, Janice (Tom) Filkins of River Falls, WI, and Randy of Cannon Falls; daughter-in-law, Cathy (Ron) McCoy of Cannon Falls; 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eleanor McCoy of Cannon Falls, Mary McCoy of Hastings, Paul Maczko of Mendota Heights, Eleanor Charlton of Hastings, Alyce Kieffer of Hastings, and Lucille Gergen of Rosemount; and many nieces and nephews. Also special to Bob were Sheryl Zeverino and Janet McCoy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius V Catholic Church, with Fr. Jay Kythe and Fr. Tom Donaldson officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in New Trier.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8 p.m., with a Knights of Columbus Rosary Service at 7 p.m., at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Active pallbearers will be his grandsons, Matthew, Chad, Mark, and Bryan McCoy, Jake Filkins, and nephew, Andy McCoy.
