Robert Johnson

January 15, 1927 — March 2, 2009

Robert “Bob” Johnson, age 82, a lifelong resident of the Cannon Falls area, died on Monday morning, March 2, 2009 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Bob was born on January 15, 1927 in Red Wing, the son of Otto and Anna (Anderson) Johnson. He attended school in Cannon Falls through the 10th grade as his father died when he was 8. He then worked on an area farm for room and board. He also worked at the cheese factory in town. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from August of1944-March of 1946, including a tour in the Aleutian Islands on Adak Island in the Bering Sea.

He married Lois Ames on April 6, 1946 in Seattle, and returned to Cannon Falls where they raised their family. Upon their return Bob taught Lois how to drive and his mother Anna taught her how to cook.

Bob was employed in the construction trade, commuting to the Twin Cities for work. He retired in 1987 at age 60. He took up golf, never keeping score. Golf was about getting out in the early morning and enjoying the fellowship and the outdoors. During retirement he and Lois enjoyed traveling in the U.S.

Bob was an avid reader of books, magazines, and newspapers. He especially enjoyed history and biography books. He also liked to garden, do crossword puzzles, and play cribbage.

Before Bob’s surgery in 2005, he loved to go downtown for coffee in the morning and in the afternoon a beer at the VFW with friends. After becoming homebound he enjoyed visits from family and friends, loved watching sports on the big TV, reading the newspaper and books, and watching the birds and the squirrels at the feeders.

Robert was a life member of the VFW Post #4452 and member of Masonic Oriental Lodge #34 in Cannon Falls.

Bob is survived by his three daughters, Carol (Gary) Hansen of Lakeville, Christine (Joseph) Kammerer of Shoreview, and Connie (Richard) Wikman of Circle Pines; one grandson, Brett Hansen and two granddaughters, Melissa and Andra Wikman; brothers, Kenneth (June), Merle (Joanne) and Merlyn Johnson, all of Cannon Falls; sisters, Vivian Quist and Doris Egge, both of Cannon Falls; also by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Johnson; his parents; brothers, Eddie, Ted and Clarence Johnson; and a sister, Florence Cartwright.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 5 at 5:00 p.m., with a visitation from 4-5 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Food and fellowship will follow.

Interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the Cannon Falls Medical Center, Cannon Falls Public Library, Cannon Falls VFW Post #4452, or Angels Care Center.
