Reynold Strusz

June 10, 1927 — January 1, 2017

Reynold August Strusz celebrated the new year by entering into Heaven and the arms of his Savior on January 1, 2017. He was a quiet, simple, patient man who lived by faith and hard work. He was 89 years of age. Reynold was born at home on June 10, 1927. The doctor told his parents, Edwin and Alvina (Hadler) Strusz, that he was a skinny runt and they should not expect him to live. In his young years he suffered from severe nosebleeds and a rapid heart beat. He attended country school when he could and managed to get through the eighth grade. He helped his parents on their farm North of Goodhue. The story of his life was written when he invited three neighbor girls to his 20th birthday party and at the end of the evening asked the youngest sister, 15-year-old Wilhelmina, if she would go out with him. They were inseparable for the next 69 years. Reynold and Wilhelmina married on April 15, 1950. They enjoyed roller-skating, movies, gatherings with friends and family, and working together. They first lived on a rented farm in Flower Valley (near Red Wing). In 1952, they purchased a farm in Goodhue Township where they worked side-by-side milking cows, raising crops and growing and improving their farm. Early on, he did some carpentry work and was good at fixing and finding unique ways to make things work. A day, or even a milking off, was very rare. After moving into the city of Goodhue in 1989, Reynold continued to help on the farm, driving to the country in his Cadillac every day to feed cows and run the land. He fully retired at the age of 81. Not bad for a kid the doctors said would never be healthy enough to be a farmer. Reynold was an active member of the Goodhue County Holstein Breeders Association, the Goodhue Pioneer Club and St. Peter's Church. He and Wilhelmina were frequent volunteers at the Wise Penny Thrift Store in Red Wing and played Euchre every chance they had. He resided the past 2 years at Deer Crest Assisted Living in Red Wing. Reynold is survived by son, Mark (Bonnie) Strusz and daughter, Beth (Larry) Brekke all of Goodhue; grandchildren, Morgan (Keith) Allen and Jordan Strusz; and great-grandchildren, Mason and Reese Allen. He is also survived by his sister, Erma Gerken of Red Wing and brother, Elroy (Shirley) Strusz of Zumbrota, and extended family and friends. Wilhelmina has been waiting for him since August 12, 2016 and met him at Heaven's gate with their infant son, Howard (1966). He was also preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Steven Strusz; brothers-in-law, Herbert Gerken and Werner Peters; and sisters-in-law, Laurina Holst and Dora Peters.
