Raymond Ohnstad

February 10, 1924 — March 31, 2011

Raymond Clifford Ohnstad, age 87, a lifelong resident of Leon Township, died on Thursday afternoon, March 31, 2011 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Raymond was born on February 10, 1924 in Leon Township, the son of R. Clarence and Julia (Kolstad) Ohnstad. Raymond was a farmer most of his life on the home place where he was born. It was homesteaded by his grandparents, and it stayed in the family. He attended rural District #45 school, and also spent a few years working at Brockway Glass in Rosemount, MN. He married Mildred L. Hernke on June 11, 1949 at Urland Lutheran Church. He and Millie were able to go on many vacations to Norway, Alaska and all over the U.S. He was very proud of and supported Mildred through her teaching career and education. He enjoyed going for drives, spending time with family and friends, playing cards, eating lutefisk and telling stories about the "old days," sometimes many times over. His family meant the world to him and he was religious about spending time with them. Raymond will forever be remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humor that matched perfectly with his unforgettable smile and the twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes. There were many trials and tribulations throughout his life, but he persevered and remained a very humble man. His faith in God never wavered and he remained one of the kindest and gentlest men you will ever meet. It was a privilege for all to have known Raymond. He set an example of unselfishness and humanity that few of us will ever be able to achieve. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pearl (Oscar) Detlie; and brothers-in-law, Elroy, Virgil and Marvin Hernke. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mildred of Cannon Falls; niece and Goddaughter, Julie Ann (Wayne) Eddy of Northfield; great niece, Angel Eddy of Northfield; grand niece, Sydnee Eddy of Northfield; and Godchildren, Lois Estrem, Mary Jo Meyer, Bonnie Thompson, Linda Kispert, Linda Flom, Linda Wilson, Sheryl Soule, Rahn Hernke, Elrene Clauson, John Nygaard and Judy Huggett. He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Owen (Gladys) Hernke of Cannon Falls, Jean Hernke of Cannon Falls, Arlene Hernke of Cannon Falls, Elaine Hernke of Farmington, and Allen (BettyAnn) Hernke of Cannon Falls; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Urland Lutheran Church, with Pastor Arthur Sharot officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-5 p.m., with a prayer service at 4:30 p.m., at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Monday from 10-11 a.m. Memorials are preferred to the Urland Lutheran Church.
