Olive Clarice Gertrude Rustad, age 91 of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday evening, September 15, 2011 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Olive was born at home on May 6, 1920 in Leon Township, the daughter of Olaus and Christine (Erie) Rustad. Olive's father, Olaus died before Olive was born, and so she was raised by her step father, Iver O. Rustad. She schooled in Canby, MN and at the age of 12, moved to rural Kenyon and attended Underdahl country school (9 miles north of Kenyon.) She started working in 1944 at the Colonial Hospital in Rochester, where she was a kitchen aid and nurses aid. In 1950, she went to work at the Samaritan Nursing Home in Rochester until 1977, when she came to work at the Cannon Nursing Home. She was a kitchen aid until her retirement in 1983. Olive was an active member of Our Saviour's Ev. Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. She had resided at Freeborn Manor in Cannon Falls for 28 years, and has been residing at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls since May, 2008. She liked to play bingo and took part in everything they were doing. The great joy in Olive's life was watching her godson, Ben Bakken grow up. She was very proud of him! When Ben and Bekki were married, she couldn't have been prouder. She would have loved to watch their two sons grow up. Olive will be remembered as a very kind and gentle person. She was preceded in death by her parents, Olaus and Christine Rustad; step father, Iver O. Rustad; half sister, Irene Rustad; and half brother, Irven Rustad. She is survived by Ben and Bekki Bakken and their sons, Griffin and August, all of Wanamingo; sister-in-law, Darlene Rustad of Cannon Falls; nephews, Richard Rustad of Prior Lake and Leslie Rustad of Burnsville; niece, Beverlee Rustad of Eden Prairie; and many cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Our Saviour's Ev. Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Dan Brue officiating. Interment will follow at the Hauge Old Stone Church Cemetery near Kenyon. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Saviour's Ev. Lutheran Church, the Shepherd Center, or the chapel fund at Angels Care Center.
