Melvin Stanko

Melvin "Mel" Stanko, 82 of Cannon Falls, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 21st, 2012 at Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Mel was born on June 1st, 1930 in Becker, MN to Michael and Susan. He graduated in 1949 from South High in Minneapolis. He served six years in the National Guard and the Air Force. On November 13th, 1954, Mel married Ann Marie Holton. He was employed by Western Electric, Minneapolis for thirty-five years before he purchased and operated the Pool Hall in Kenyon. He also worked at Bumper To Bumper Auto, Cannon Falls. Mel held the state track record in the half-mile for many years and qualified as an alternate for the USA Olympic Speed Skating Team. Mel attended Holden Lutheran Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. He was a member of the Kenyon and Cannon Falls Lions Clubs, the Kenyon American Legion, and the Cannon Cruisers. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Planes, trains, antique cars, speed skating, big band, polka and church organ music, pro wrestling, and tending to his roses were some of his many interests. Mel was known for his humor and wittiness, his sharp memory, and his ability to socialize. Mel is survived by his wife, Ann (57 years); sons Richard (Mandy), Russell (Dorthy), Ronald (Teri); daughters Roberta (Albert) Grannis, Rebecca (David) Friese; grandchildren, Nicholas and Isabella Stanko, Vannessa (John) Meyer, Victoria Miller (fiancé Gandencio), Shawna (Scott) Grieger, Aaron (Sara) Quam, Sally, Joshua, Rachel, and Marshall Friese; great-grandchildren Ava and Collin Meyer, Mariah and Mason Grieger, Stella Mandujano, and Madison Quam; sister, Helen Hanson; brothers, Harry Stanko and Ed (Perk) Stanko; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, John, Dan, Adolph and Mike Stanko. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 24 from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 25 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Holden Lutheran Church, Kenyon. Interment with military honors will follow at the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Holden Lutheran Church. Active pallbearers will be nephews, Jim, Darrell, Dana, Jason, Davis, Tim and Jeff Stanko.
