Mary Rauvola

July 16, 1910 — March 28, 2011

Mary Edith Rauvola, age 100 of Cannon Falls and formerly a longtime resident of Randolph, died on March 28, 2011 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Mary was born on July 16, 1910 in Stanton Township, the daughter of Samuel D. and Bernice "Berry" (Foster) Smith. She was raised in the Stanton United Methodist Church, and graduated from Randolph High School in 1927. She completed one year of Normal training at Winona State, and taught country school near Belle Creek and in Stanton Township. She married Ernest A. "Ernie" Rauvola at July 8, 1936. They farmed in Stanton Township, and were active members of Randolph United Methodist Church (now Christ United Methodist). Mary was active in the ladies aid and Sunday school. As well as raising her family, Mary had been employed at Collins Produce in Cannon Falls, Kid Duds in Cannon Falls, and for many years at Siem's Hardware and Hjermstad Hardware. She always worked hard, but found enjoyment in baking and decorating birthday cakes for friends and family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, spending time outdoors, gardening, quilting with the neighbors, and the monthly birthday club outings. Mary also enjoyed sewing, and made many aprons and tablecloths. Her husband, Ernie died on May 1, 1988. Mary continued living on the farm until moving to the Angels Care Center in January, 2001. She is survived by her sons, Curtis (Arlene) of Randolph and Gerald "Jerry" (Barbara) of Zumbrota; six grandchildren, Arne (Sandy) Rauvola of Randolph, Holli (John) Hopkins of Superior, MT, Heidi (James) Amari of Florence, MT, Nichen (Mike) Schwenker of Rochester, Erin (Scott) Logan of Zumbrota and Derek (Amber) Dougherty of Rochester; nine great-grandchildren, Arne and Nicole Rauvola, Sarah and Katherine Hopkins, Hannah (Christopher) Elder, Sophia and Alexander Etier, Vienna and Marley Dougherty; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Samuel and Olivia Elder; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernie; grandson, Eric Rauvola; sister, Ruth Lueck; and brother, Samuel Smith. Funeral service will be held on Friday April 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church in Randolph, with Pastor Daniel Horn officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday April 1, 2011 from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Active pallbearers will be Steven Pressnall, Donald Sheets, Arthur Gangloff, Ronald Almos, Bill McCallum and Arne J. Rauvola. Honorary pallbearer will be Jim Hjermstad.
