Mary Olson

Mary Louise Olson, age 80 of Cannon Falls, died on Wednesday afternoon, April 24, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Mary was born March 16, 1933, in Cadiz, Kentucky, the only child to Ebert and Louise (Oatts) Ketcham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar "Ole" Olson; her parents and stepfather Herbert Lundell; and sister-in-law, Irene Brandt. She is survived by her children, Deanna Olson (Larry Jensen) of Cannon Falls, Wyatt Olson of Tokyo, Japan, and Cammy (Bob) Johnson of Nevis, Minnesota; grandson, Adam (Amy) Baxter; three great-grandchildren, Desmond Baxter and Ilsa and Calvin Madison; niece, Bonnie Anderson and her family; and many cousins. Mary graduated from Hopkinsville High School in Kentucky. While visiting her mother in Cannon Falls, Mary met Ole, whom she married June 15, 1952, at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. They moved to Hill City, Minnesota, soon after marrying, where they lived in a three-room log cabin. They had three children before moving to a farm southwest of Cannon Falls in 1960. She was a homemaker and worked part-time at Peterson's Turkey Farm and Kid Duds. She also worked the family sheep farm. She was a very active member of Wangen Prairie Church, serving many positions in Sunday School, Ladies Aid, Mission Circle and church council. She regularly attended Bible study. She served her faith by volunteering outside her church in nursing homes and committees. An avid traveler, she visited everywhere from Hawaii and Cancun to China and the Caribbean. Mary was a lover of animals, babies, garage sales and -- having never forgotten her Southern roots -- hot weather. She was a patron and supporter of the Cannon Falls Library. She will be most remembered for her kindness and warm spirit. She will be missed by the many lives she touched. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Wangen Prairie Lutheran Church, with Pastor Curtis Fox officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at church on Monday from 10-11 a.m. Memorials are preferred to Wangen Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.
