Marlys Julianne (Skog) Nelson, age 90 of Vasa, died on Friday morning, May 1, 2009 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Marlys was born on January 20, 1919 in Cannon Falls Township, the daughter of Julius and Anna (Kolbe) Skog. She graduated from the Cannon Falls High School in 1937, and attended teacher training in Cannon Falls. She graduated in 1938, and in the fall accepted a rural school in the township of Wanamingo/Zumbrota. She completed 5 years of elementary school teaching in District 95.

Marlys married Herbert W. Nelson from Vasa on September 25, 1943. They were married at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. In 1944 she taught for one year in her home district (Vasa) until she had her children. They lived on the family farm in Vasa. In 1969, Marlys went to work for Mineral Springs, which was then a TB Sanitarium. She did nurses aid work until the TB part was closed out and Mineral Springs became a chemical dependency center. Marlys continued her work as a technician. Then in 1973, she went to work at the Cannon Falls Nursing Home for 3 months, and later worked at the Cannon Falls Hospital as a certified nursing assistant until retiring in 1998. She loved taking care of people and helping them in need.

She was a member of the Vasa Lutheran Church, and was active in Gleaners and WELCA, was a representative for Vasa at Shepherds Center, and served as a staff support at Vasa Church. She had also been active in Sunday School teaching for several years at Vasa and St. Ansgar’s Church. She had also been a 4-H leader for 13 years for the Vasa Happy Hustlers 4-H Club.

She loved gardening, reading, and animals (especially her dog Buttons and cats.) She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchild. She was a kind and gentle person, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Suzanne (Lyle) Ness of Vasa and Mrs. Julie (Thomas) Eilen of Hampton; her grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Ness, Jessica Ness, Patrick, Jonathan and Jodie Eilen; her great grandchild, Jaden Eilen and his mother, Anne; and one sister, Verlaine Skog of Cannon Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Anna Skog; her husband, Herbert on September 25, 1991; her grandson, Jacob Eilen on November 23, 2008; her brother, Deane Skog; and three sisters, Doris Lellman, LaVine Stauning, and Muriel Lindholm.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vasa Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Dobbins officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Jason and Jennifer Ness, Jessica Ness, Anne and Jaden Eilen, Patrick Eilen, Jonathan Eilen and Jodie Eilen.
