Marjorie Pagel

July 27, 1918 — November 29, 2007

Marjorie Lorraine Pagel, age 89 of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul.

Marjorie was born on July 27, 1918 in Unityville, South Dakota, the daughter of Fred "Almer" and Hannah Appalonia (Larson) Benson. When Marjorie was 18 months of age, her mother died in childbirth and the children came to Cannon Falls to live with their great uncle and aunt, Charlie and Alma Lewis. Marjorie continued living on the same Leon Township farm for 86 of her years!

Marjorie attended country school in Leon Township, and was involved in 4H. She was one of the first from Goodhue County to demonstrate at the MN State Fair. She met her future husband on the family farm, as he was a hired hand for the Lewis'.

Marjorie married Howard M. Pagel on December 22, 1937 at the Spring Garden parsonage. Shortly after their marriage, they started their farming together on the Lewis farm. Along with the farm and house work, Marjorie helped raise their children. After Howard's sudden death on August 5, 1969, the children helped their mother continue to farm. At age 60, she started working in Cannon Falls at the Dead End Restaurant, Thomas' Clothing, and the Cannon Falls Community Hospital. She was a cook at the hospital for about 15 years.

Marjorie was very active in her church and community. A longtime, active member of Spring Garden Lutheran Church, she was involved with the Willing Workers, Swedish singers, quilting, and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a 4H leader for many years, and had taken trips with the kids to Norway and London. She started a reading group at the Stonehouse Apartments, and had received the first Community Spirit Award through Community Bank in Cannon Falls.

Marjorie enjoyed reading, helping others in need, being outside, listening to the birds, and riding horse. She will be remembered most for her love of family and church, her kindess and generosity, and her welcoming manner. She will be missed greatly, and fondly remembered by all who knew her!

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; sons, Elmer and Kevin; daughter, Martha; granddaughter, Arica Pagel; brother, Kenneth Benson; and sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Elmer) Johnson.
