Marie (Mortenson) Otto, Age 77, passed away Thursday Feb. 15, 2007 after a seven year battle with Ovarian Cancer. Marie was born at home on the family farm south of Alberta, Minnesota to Ella Wickstrom and Louis Mortenson on October 17, 1929. In 1936 the family moved to a farm north of Randolph. Marie attended grades 1-10 at Randolph Public School.
She married John Otto in 1948. They had ten children and were later divorced. She married Kenneth W. McAuley in 1973 and later divorced.
In 1967 she earned her GED. She enrolled in the LPN program in Faribault and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1969. She worked at Rice County District One Hospital in Faribault, Northfield City Hospital, Northfield Retirement Center, Harmony Health Care Center in St. Paul and many nursing homes in the Twin Cities. She retired after serving over 25 years in the nursing profession.
After retirement, Marie became an accomplished writer and author, writing her life story, entitled "Becoming Marie." She also wrote poetry and short stories which she shared with her family and friends. And some of her writings were published in the Turtle River Press.
She also enjoyed singing, dancing, telling jokes, studying world history and collecting old death certificates.
Marie is lovingly survived by her children Robert (Nan) Otto of Yucaipa, CA, William (Judy) Otto of Mason City, IA, Beverly (John) Davidson of Faribault, MN, Metta (Deryl) Rogers of Minneapolis, Patricia (Wally) Stenzel of Wells, MN, Lucy (Jack) St. John of Bloomer, WI, Marlene Otto of Burnsville, MN, Darlene Lundell of Cannon Falls, MN, John Otto of Cannon Falls, MN & Charles Otto of Owatonna; 17 grandchildren Michelle (Chad) Darcy, Brian (Jennifer) Otto, Tim Otto, Brenda (Jason) Wells, Dawn (Chris) O'Neil, Serobert Gulley, Jeramiah Gulley, Angela (Amit) Deokar, Kim Johnson, Katie (Aaron) Ligocki, Rebecca (Brian) Woodhull, Clinton (Joy) St. John, Nicholas St. John, Preston Otto, Derek Lundell, Brent Lundell, Courtney Lundell & 14 great grandchildren; 2 sisters Olive Lowery and Hazel Mortenson & 3 brothers Martin, Harold and Carl Mortenson. Also by an uncle Otto Mortenson and by special friend Dan Condon. Preceding her in death were her parents.
Marie will be missed by her many friends, the ovarian cancer support group at the Women's Cancer Resource Center in Minneapolis and the Savage Sisters Ovarian Cancer Support Group. Dr. John E. Savage, gynecological oncologist, Sue McIntyre, nurse practitioner, all the oncology nurses, lab personnel and the chemotherapy patients from the fourth floor of the St. Paul Ritchie Building. Marie's strength came from her faith as a devout Catholic.
