Lyle Orvin Brekken, age 89 of Cannon Falls, died at Twin Rivers Senior Campus on Sunday evening, July 6, 2014. He was born on May 6, 1925 on the Brekken farm in Warsaw Township, the son of Austin and Tulie (Reed) Brekken. Lyle attended Kenyon High School. He joined the US Navy in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. Lyle married Merdieth Ardella Mills on September 11, 1946 at First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. They lived in Faribault and Lyle worked for Zelner Manufacturing until moving to the family farm in Dennison in 1951. He farmed and did construction work with his brother, Austin until moving to Cannon Falls in 1965. He then worked for James Steel Construction and was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners Union until his retirement in 1988. Once retired he enjoyed his 'shop' at Midwest of Cannon Falls, helping build displays and props for their showrooms throughout the United States. Lyle enjoyed life and loved his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren, seldom missing one of their sporting or church events. He always had time to play. He enjoyed building projects and fixing things. He was the family fix it man and always did it with a smile. His calm and gentle manner will be missed, and will always remember that the harshest word he ever used was "Uffda." Lyle is survived by son, Dennis (Kathleen) Brekken and daughter, Elizabeth (Douglas) Carroll, all of Cannon Falls; grandchildren, Alexander (Wendy) Brekken of Eagan, John (Renae) Brekken of Minnetonka, and Amanda Carroll of Cannon Falls; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Austin and Catherine Brekken; and sister-in-law, Inez Mills of Northfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Merdie; nine brothers and sisters; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at First English Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls. Interment with military honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandchildren Alexander and John Brekken, and Amanda Carroll, nephews Brian Brekken, David Lenway and Douglas Johnson. Memorials are preferred to First English Lutheran Church, St. Croix Hospice, and Twin Rivers Senior Campus.
