Lyla Davis

Lyla Loraine (nee Grote) Davis, age 85 of Cannon Falls, died on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Lyla was born on June 14, 1924 in Red Wing, the daughter of Walter “Bing” and Signe (Westberg) Grote. She graduated in 1942 from the Cannon Falls High School. She married Norvin Olson in April of 1943 and later Lynn Henry Davis in October of 1951.

Lyla has resided in Cannon Falls for most of her life, with exception to living in Buffalo City, WI from 1967-1986. In Cannon Falls, she was an active member of St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, and served on the worship, prayer and call committees. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, and had served as president. She was also on the board of the Shepherd Center, and was a foster grandparent at the Cannon Falls Elementary School. While living in Wisconsin, she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alma, where she was on church council and was the Sunday school superintendent. She had also worked with mentally handicapped adults. Lyla loved life!

She is survived by her nine children, Gary (Jean) Olson of Maplewood, Robert (Karen) Olson of Shakopee, Timothy Olson of St. Paul, James (Teresa) Davis of Cannon Falls, Pattie Newell of Winona, Kim (John) Rislove of Fountain City, WI, Mark Davis of Red Wing, Jon (Jill) Davis of Portland, OR, and Lonnie (Joe) Bartee of Minnetonka; 17 grandchildren; David (Renee) Olson, Elizabeth (Mike) Greenleaf, Andrew Olson, Kari (Derek) Selchow, Joey, Brian and Chelsea Davis, Elizabeth and Zachary Vold, Jennifer Chiulli, Trevor and Taylor Davis, Clay and Sam Kimber, Catey Rank, Luke and Nathan Rislove, 7 great-grandchildren; Tyler, Kobe and Autumn Olson, Ben, Alex & Grant Selchow and Kaitlyn Davis, brothers and sisters, Don (Lois) Grote of Yuma, AZ, Dale (Marilyn) Grote of Rio Verde, AZ, James (Pearl) Grote of Las Vegas, NV, John (Rosemary) Grote of Winona, and Pat (Lee) Olson of Roseville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Louise Davis; her grandson, Jonathan Olson and both husbands, Norvin Olson & Lynn Henry Davis.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Gary Schulz, officiating. Interment with VFW Auxiliary Honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:30 until service time at the church on Saturday. Memorials are preferred to St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, the Good Sam Fund, and the Shepherd Center.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, and the Sanibel Girls.
