Loren Berkness

Loren Gerald Berkness, age 82 of Cannon Falls, died at his home on Monday evening, February 21, 2011. He was born on September 18, 1928 at Lakefield, MN, the son of Albert and Christina Berkness. He graduated from Lakefield High School and later from Lutheran Bible Institute and Augsburg College. He served two years in the US Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, and in 1952 married Doris Elaine Bakken of Mentor, MN. Loren taught mathematics at Johnson Senior High School in St. Paul for 23 years. He married Terri Thompson in 1973 and moved to Cannon Falls in 1992. He was a member of the Gideons for 40 years including a ministry at the Red Wing County Jail. He enjoyed traveling, farming, photography and restoring antiques. He is survived by his wife, Terri; his children, LoAnn Martens of Waukegon, IL, Wanda (William) Burns of Beach Park, IL, Phillip (Teri) Berkness of Savage, Steven Berkness of Isanti, Jeffrey (Barbara) Berkness of Savage, Kristy (Eric) Hamilton of Malibu, CA and Michelene (Michael) Reed of Waukegon, IL; 27 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Vernon (Jean) Berkness of Minnetonka. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 26 at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Ev. Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Tim Banks and Pastor Martin Horn co-officiating. Active pallbearers will be Ron Stromme, Terry Jacobson, Jim Yngsdal, Larry Grove, Brian Anfinson and Harlan Hjermstad. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m., with a brief prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation on Saturday at church from 10-11 a.m. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
