LeRoy Carl "Custer" Kilmer, age 58 of Hampton, died at home on Friday afternoon, May 18, 2007. A longtime resident of Harris, MN, where he resided with Kathleen Brockway, returned to the Cannon Falls area in April to be with his family during his illness.
He was born on April 15, 1949 in Aitkin, MN, the son of Arthur L. and Lois H. (Mitchell) Kilmer. He attended Aitkin High School, and went on to serve with the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict from June 6, 1967 until his honorable discharge on May 19, 1969.
LeRoy worked with different carnivals, including Ranier Shows. He married Carol Miller on January 6, 1972 in Los Angeles, CA. He was a "jack of all trades",and enjoyed woodworking and welding. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved to travel and would find "home" wherever he landed! He always left a part of himself with those he shared time with. He was always welcome wherever his motorcycle would take him! LeRoy was a chaplin and president of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club, Chapter C.
He will be remembered most for his love of traveling, his thoughtfulness of others, and his free spirit!
He is survived by his faithful companion, his service dog Tweak; four children, LeRoy Carl "J.R." Kilmer, Jr. of Rochester, Casey Kilmer of Sioux Falls, SD, Cassandra Kilmer of Boxelder, SD and Jamina Allen of Pierre, SD; seven grandchildren, Haley, Seth, Nathan, Faith, Justice, Damon and Freedom; step-children, Robert, James and Colleen, and their families; his mother, Lois Kilmer of Cannon Falls; sisters and brothers, January (Jerry) Berg of McGregor, Judy (Glen) Seibert of Cohasset, Linda (Ron) Vivant of Hampton, Cheryl (Rick) Peine of Hampton, Bill (Sue) Kilmer of Cannon Falls, Ken (Cathy) Kilmer of Ellsworth, WI, Mary (Carl) Cadle of Cannon Falls, Karen (Todd) Satter of Pine City, and Becky (Kelly) Ruddle of Hastings; sister-in-law, Mary Kilmer of Cannon Falls; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and special friends, Rita and Kim.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur; brother, Les Kilmer; brother-in-law, Kevin Schabert; granddaughter, Hope; and nephew, Travis Cadle and great nephew, Logan Kilmer.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 22 at 7:00 pm, with a visitation from 4-7 pm, at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. The funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Nick Fisher-Broin.
Interment with military honors will be on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be J.R. Kilmer, Bill Kilmer, Ken Kilmer, Shaun Satter, Ron Vivant and Rick Peine. Honorary pallbearers will be Casey Kilmer, Jeremy Berg, Jerry Berg, and Roger "Hondo" Swedland.
