LeRoy Benson

LeRoy Allen "Rev" Benson, age 65 of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, August 25, 2011 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. He was born on January 1, 1946 in Cannon Falls, the son of Wesley and Rose (Dierke) Benson. He attended Cannon Falls High School, and went on to barber school in St. Paul. He married Bette Gordon in 1970 and they later divorced. Lee worked for most of his life as a laborer for several construction contractors in the area. He had been a member of the Minnesota Laborers Union. He enjoyed his daily routines which included spending time at the horse barns at the fairgrounds, socializing with friends at Brewsters, sharing conversation with friends on his front porch, and his trips to Treasure Island. He was especially proud of the fact that he had been sober for nearly 11 years. He is survived by his son, Scott (Joanne) Holmes of Embarrass, MN; nieces and nephew, Julie (mark) Alexander of Scottsdale, AZ, Daniel Benson of Farmington, and Brenda (Tim) McDonald of Rush City; great nieces and nephews, Brandon and Alicia Rose Benson, Jacqueline, Katelyn and Shea Lee McDonald; sister-in-law, Karen (Hansen) Benson of Pine City; aunts, Helen Benson and Eleanor Hultman, both of Cannon Falls; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wes and Rose; and brother, William "Billy" Benson. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m., with visitation from 1-2 p.m., at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy 19 Blvd, Cannon Falls. Pastor Gary Schulz will officiate. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Scott Holmes, Blaine Husbyn, Lyle Noble, Dan Benson, Tim McDonald, Scott Freier, John Shellenbarger, Jay Chytracek, Mark Alexander and David Pagel. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Shellenbarger, Dave and Bob Benson, Mike Gorman and "Anyone that wants a free meal!" per Rev. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
