Leonard Plonsky

Leonard Frank Plonsky, age 86 of Cannon Falls, died on Friday morning, June 23, 2017 at The Gardens at Cannon Falls. Leonard was born at the family’s home in Heidelberg, MN on May 31, 1931, the son of Peter and Cecelia (Knopik) Plonsky. He attended school and later graduated from high school in Montgomery, MN. He enlisted in the US Army, and served during the Korean Conflict from 1951-54. On September 22, 1956, he married Grace E. Picka. They raised their family in Cannon Falls. Grace died on September 16, 1984. Leonard was remarried to Stephanie Rankila, and they later divorced. Leonard was a member of the Teamsters Union, and was employed by Dahlen Transport in Newport, MN until retiring in 1993. He enjoyed his retirement job, trucking for Hader Farms. He was also a member of the VFW Nelson Scofield Post #4452. In his spare time, Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, and feeding and watching the birds. He enjoyed several fishing and hunting trips, but one of his favorites was going to Canada moose hunting. He was known for being quite a “sharp shooter.” He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace; and two brothers, Richard and Clarence. He is survived by his children, Deb Plonsky, Dale Plonsky, Bruce (Deanna) Plonsky, and Pam (Bob) Beach, all of Cannon Falls; ten grandchildren, Dallas Lloyd, Derik Plonsky, Ashley (Jared) Hiniker, Ryan (Tracy) Plonsky, Kimberly (Corey) Trembath, Tatum Plonsky, Brett (Michelle) Plonsky, Amanda (Ryan) Halbert, Madalyn Beach and Garrett Beach; three great-grandchildren, Grayson Plonsky, Miller Plonsky, and Evelyn Halbert; brothers, Lawrence “Chappy” Plonsky of Heidelberg and Merlin Plonsky of Montgomery; brother-in-law, Harry Picka of Fairmont; sister-in-law, LaVerna Picka of New Prague; and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 29 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 9:30-11:00 a.m., at St. Pius V Catholic Church, Cannon Falls. Interment with military honors will follow at the church cemetery. His grandchildren will be urn bearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donor’s choice.
