Leo Berg

Leo Ernest Berg, age 71, a longtime resident of the White Rock/Cannon Falls area, died on Friday evening, December 25, 2009 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Leo was born on August 19, 1938 in Red Wing, the son of Ernest A. and Betty L. (Martenson) Berg. He was a lifelong member of Spring Garden Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed.

Leo graduated from the Cannon Falls High School in 1956, and a short time later had gone to work at Sheldahl in Northfield. He was employed there for 38 years, until his retirement.

He married Virginia “Nicky” Finstuen, and they had two daughters to that union. They later divorced.

Leo loved to travel and enjoyed spending time with kids and grandkids. He also enjoyed being involved with horses and harness racing and watching local baseball games.

He will be remembered most for his love of family, especially his grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren as “Grandpa Berger.”

Leo is survived by his two daughters, Leah (Brett) DeBates and Nina (John) Frank, all of Lakeville; five grandchildren, Nick and Nathan DeBates, Megan, Alex and Johnna Frank; sister-in-law, Delma Berg of Cannon Falls; nephew, Tom (LaReine) Berg; nieces, Beverly Harding, Brenda Rapp, and Laurel (Pat) Holland; cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Silas Berg.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Spring Garden Lutheran Church, with Pastors Nick and Cindy Fisher-Broin officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29 from 4-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m.



Active casketbearers will be Brett DeBates, John Frank, Tom Berg, Willis Swenson, Bernie Mattson, and Conrad Lindell. Honorary casketbearer is Herb Nerison.
