Laverne Reese

Laverne Henry Reese, age 88, a longtime resident of Goodhue, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, June 22, 2016 at St. Crispin Care Center in Red Wing. Laverne was born on June 4, 1928 in rural Goodhue, MN the son of Arthur Sr. and Amanda (Lohmeyer) Reese. He grew up in Goodhue and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in rural Goodhue. He married Lenea C. Johnson on September 12, 1949 at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. They made their home in rural Goodhue, and he farmed most of his life in Featherstone Township. He enjoyed working on the farm, milking cows, and taking care of his horses. Laverne was a self-employed trucker for many years. He was an original charter member of the Goodhue County Sheriff's Posse. He is an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Goodhue, where he has served as a board member and usher. He is survived by his children, Karen (Roger) O'Reilly of Red Wing, Larry (Sue Meyers) Reese of Goodhue, Nancy (Jim) Vickerman of Rosemount and Grace (James) Kelzer of Richfield; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, Arthur Jr. of Red Wing, Donald (Lila) of Goodhue, Harlin (Betty Lou Johnson) of Oradell, NJ and Hilbert (Bernie) of Northfield; sisters-in-law, Donna Reese of Hutchinson, Joan Johnson of Bloomington, Astrid Johnson of Red Wing, Ruth (Ray) Carlson of Bay City, WI; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 36 years, Lenea on April 15, 1986; four grandchildren, Erin and Micah O'Reilly, Amanda and Allie Kelzer; brother, John; and in-laws, Velva and Dorothy Reese, Helen and Keith Baker, Adeline and John Saller, and Hamline Johnson. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 26 from 4-8 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Goodhue. Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at the church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Goodhue with Goodhue County Sheriff's Posse Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Nick and Mitch O'Reilly, Cody and Adam Vickerman, Karl and Simon Bordthauser. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, Sam O'Reilly, Charlotte Volkmann, Jamie O'Reilly, Sara Ohman, Shane, Kyle, and Tyler Vickerman, Esther, Claire, Martha and Rachel Kelzer. Memorials are preferred to St. Luke Lutheran Church or Goodhue County Sheriff's Posse.
