Kenneth Luel “Ken” Michaelis, age 93 of Cannon Falls, died peacefully on Friday afternoon, April 16, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
Ken was born on March 5, 1917 in Hannaford, North Dakota, the son of Ernest and Emma (Hogie) Michaelis. He grew up during the Depression era on the family farm near Hannaford, and had attended Michaelis country school near the farm.
He moved to a farm in the Sogn area near Cannon Falls, Minnesota in the late 40’s or early 50’s. He lived in Goodhue County and worked as a farm hand at Hernkes, Inc. for 16 years, and later for Larry and Ginger Coss (Cannon River Farms) for several years. He had also worked at Althoff Hardware in Cannon Falls for many years.
Ken loved to play accordion and old-time dancing. He also enjoyed traveling in his later years, and playing cribbage.
He is survived by his five children, Darwin (Sandy) Michaelis of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kathy (Paul) Krishnan of Detroit, Michigan, Darrell (Pam) Michaelis of Middleborough, Massachusetts, Robin (Adam) Michaelis of Overland Park, Kansas, and Stacey Michaelis of Arlington Heights, Illinois; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his special friend, Dorothy Thomas of Cannon Falls; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three siblings, Walter Michaelis, Thelma Jungles, and Delores “Dickie” Wisdahl.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m., with a visitation from 1-2 p.m., at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Phillip Ruud and Pastor Dan Forsgren officiating.
Interment of his cremated remains will take place at a later date at the Cooperstown Cemetery in Cooperstown, North Dakota.
