Surrounded by his family, Ken age 65 died peacefully at home of pancreatic cancer on Sunday, July 31, 2016. He didn't win the war, but he won many battles in this 21 month medical journey. Ken was a man of faith, family, friends, integrity, and shenanigans.
Ken and his family moved from South St. Paul to rural Cannon Falls in 1993. A 40 year employee of 3M Company, he retired in 2011.
He is preceded in death by parents, Donald and Mary, mother-in-law Inez Kearns, and niece, Jennifer. Survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy; daughter Audrey of Rochester; son Levi of St. Paul; Godson Christian of Vienna, Austria; brothers Richard and Donald; sisters Jean and Helene. An enthusiastic, life-long skier, Ken's goal was always to ski his age—racking up impressive vertical every season. Ken took great pride in a lawn well mowed and did so effortlessly! A devoted family man, he taught his kids to love the out-of-doors hiking, camping, skiing, and the proper way to build a bonfire—start with pallets! Ken was a long-time member of the Cannon Falls Rotary serving as past President and other offices. It was his honor to be its Chaplain. He volunteered for many area civic, church and school projects and activities. Ken never called attention to himself—faithfully, reliably, and quietly doing whatever needed to be done.
We would like to thank the Mayo Hospice-Red Wing for their compassion and support this July for us to care for Ken at home like he wanted. Also, we want to thank the fabulous care teams at Mayo Clinic-Rochester for everything they provided during Ken's treatment. Everyone on Gonda 9 East: Jessica, CNP; Allison, RN; Veronica, Gina, Jon, and Dr. Grothey; the Chemo/Infusion teams on Gonda 10; the Transfusion department in Eisenberg; the nurses, doctors, and staff in Methodist Hospital; and Mayo Health System-Cannon Falls. You made Ken's journey easier and his time with us as long as it could be. Thank you.
