Katherine Marie Margaret "Kay" VonBargen, age 85 of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday evening, February 21, 2008 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
Kay was born on September 16, 1922 in Red Wing, the daughter of Fredrick and Laura (Duden) Luhman. She grew up in Goodhue, and was baptized on October 15, 1922 and later confirmed on May 31, 1936 at St. John's Lutheran Church near Goodhue. She graduated on May 29, 1941 from the Goodhue High School.
She married Sylvester F. "Sonny" VonBargen on June 28, 1941 at the St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage near Goodhue. They farmed in the Vasa Community from 1943 until 1989.
They were members of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where Kay had been active in ladies aid.
Kay will be remembered most for her welcoming smile, and the enjoyment she received from visiting with family and friends. The coffee was always on! She loved baking, gardening, crocheting, playing cards, and strawberry picking. Her family was the most important part of her life, and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Kay and Sonny were married 65 years, when Sonny died on September 9, 2006.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sylvester "Sonny" VonBargen; and son, Curtis on January 29, 1996.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon and her husband Lowell Anderson of Cannon Falls; daughter-in-law, Linda VonBargen of Welch; her five grandchildren and their spouses, Lori and Brian Otto, Tammy and Randy Otto, Teresa and Luke Wisniewski, Jeff and Nina Anderson, and Tony and Becky VonBargen; eleven great-grandchildren, Alexandra Otto, Randy Otto, Jr., Parker and Riley Wisniewski, Tristan and Caitlyn VonBargen, Megan Bartel, Amarah and Ella Otto, and Payton and Cameron Anderson; sister, Marcella Buck of Goodhue; brother, Donald (Ruth) Luhman of Fergus Falls; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Lou Haubrick of Anoka, and Donald and Kathleen VonBargen of Richfield; several nieces and nephews; and a special neighbor boy, Nick.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 27 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Gary Schulz and Pastor Dorothy Sandahl officiating.
Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Wednesday from 12-1 p.m.
Memorials are preferred to St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church or the Angels Care Center chapel fund.
Active casketbearers will be her grandchildren, Lori and Brian Otto, Tammy and Randy Otto, Teresa and Luke Wisniewski, Jeff and Nina Anderson, and Tony and Becky VonBargen.
Honorary casketbearers will be her eleven great-grandchildren, Alexandra Otto, Randy Otto, Jr., Parker and Riley Wisniewski, Tristan and Caitlyn VonBargen, Megan Bartel, Amarah and Ella Otto, and Payton and Cameron Anderson.
