Joel Merrills Huelskamp, age 74 of Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday afternoon, April 28, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Joel was born on the family farm in St. George, MN (West Newton) on March 19, 1935, the son of Frank J. and Hertha I. (Becker) Huelskamp. At the age of 11, his family moved to Mankato. He graduated in 1953 from Mankato High School.
He served with the US Navy from September 28, 1954 until his honorable discharge on July 31, 1958.
He married Lottie “Ann” Calvin in 1955 in California, and they had two daughters together. They lived in the Twin Cities. He later married Karen M. Johnson on June 26, 1964 at Minneapolis. They moved to Cannon Falls, and had two daughters.
Joel had been an electrician throughout his working career, retiring from the Minnesota Zoo.
Joel was a member of First English Lutheran Church and of the VFW Nelson Scofield Post #4452 in Cannon Falls. He enjoyed fishing, working in his shop, the purple martins, and watching westerns and military history.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Hertha Huelskamp; his first wife, Ann and second wife, Karen; two sisters, Nikki Johnson and Betty Miller; and nephew, Brad Miller.
He is survived by his daughters, Kim Daniels of Farmington, Karen (Tom) Klapperich of St. Louis Park, Susan Nelson (fiancé Larry Schuette) of Cannon Falls, and Heidi (Tim) Meyers of Cannon Falls; ten grandchildren, Dustin Rhode, Robert Rhode, Lucas Rhode, Melissa Ludewig, Carly Nelson, Emily Nelson, McKenzie Meyers, Cameron Meyers, Riley Meyers, and Bo Schuette; six great-grandchildren, Averie Rhode, Trenton Ludewig, Lottie Ludewig, Jackson Ludewig, Cassius Rhode, and Sophie Rhode; sisters and brothers, Nyla Bianco of Scottsdale, AZ, Frank Huelskamp of Brooklyn Park, Dottie (Dick) Hesseldahl of Phoenix, AZ, and Dewey (Micki) Huelskamp of North Carolina; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Friday from 10-11 a.m.
Active pallbearers will be Tim Meyers, Larry Schuette, Bo Schuette, Jon Huelskamp, Kirk Johnson, and Rick Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
