Joanne Hemmah

Joanne Marie (Hendel) Hemmah, age 75, of Hastings and formerly of Red Wing, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at her home in Hastings.

Joanne was born on June 2, 1934 in Red Wing, the daughter of Frederick and Luella (Fredrickson) Hendel. She grew up in Red Wing and graduated from Red Wing High School.

She married Vern Hemmah on April 18, 1953, and they later divorced. While living in Cannon Falls, she raised five children and was active in the First English Lutheran Church. She was the Sunday School Superintendent, and had also been active in ladies aid. Joanne later moved to Red Wing, and had worked as a nurse’s aid at nursing homes and as a sales clerk at Red Wing Pottery. Joanne enjoyed many types of crafts, including crocheting and paper cutting. She loved collecting knick-knacks, especially eggs and angels.

She loved her children and grandchildren, and will be greatly missed by them all!

She is survived by her children, Chris Hemmah of Woodbury, Mike Hemmah of Cannon Falls, Tom (Nancy) Hemmah of Burnsville, Ron (Linda) Hemmah of Cannon Falls and John (Betsy) Hemmah of South St. Paul; ten grandchildren, Preston Hemmah (who died on 9/23/04), Naomi (Troy) Szczepanski, Scott, Shane, and Jake Hemmah, Danny Museus, Felicia, Justin, and Jason Hemmah, and Barbie (Scott) Ledman; two great-grandchildren, Avery Wells and Bailey Ledman; brother, Robert Hendel of Red Wing; sister, Nancy (Curt) Smith of Woodbury; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her grandson, Preston, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 27 at 1:00 p.m., with visitation from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., at the First English Lutheran Church, 511 W. Belle St., Cannon Falls, with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Red Wing.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Scott, Shane, and Jake Hemmah, Danny Museus, Justin and Jason Hemmah. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, Preston Hemmah, Naomi Szczepanski, Felicia Hemmah and Barbie Ledman, and great-grandchildren, Avery Wells and Bailey Ledman.

Memorials are preferred to Regina Assisted Living, the Arthritis Association, or donor’s choice.
