Joan Schnaare

Joan Clara Schnaare, age 83 of Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday afternoon, March 24, 2015 at Diamond Rehab and Living of Cannon Valley, Cannon Falls. Joan was born on July 1, 1931 in Witt, Illinois, the daughter of Henry and Anne (Ernst) Holthaus. At an early age, she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Joseph and Olivia (Ernst) Hauptmann. Joan graduated in 1950 from Pana High School in Pana, IL, and went to work as a bookkeeper at Stix, Baer and Fuller in St. Louis, MO. She married James R. Schnaare on June 20, 1959. They had three children, and Joan stayed at home to care for them. They came to Cannon Falls in 1974 and were active at St. Pius V Catholic Church. She was a foster grandparent at the Cannon Falls Elementary School, where she really enjoyed working with kindergarten children. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, taking walks with her husband, and enjoyed crafts, including rug hooking. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Anne; uncle and aunt, Joseph and Olivia; son-in-law, William Relken; and sister, Catherine Lengermann. She is survived by her husband, Jim; 3 children, Paul of Cannon Falls, Ted (Michele) of Carver and Debra Relken of Jacksonville, FL; 4 grandchildren, Mikaela and Matthew Schnaare, William and Christopher Relken; 3 sisters, Sister Roselita Holthaus, Dominic Order of Springfield, IL, Gertrude (Harley) Beyers and Marilyn Holthaus, all of Oconee, IL; 4 brothers, Charles Holthaus and Harold Holthaus, both of Pana, IL, William (Evelyn) Holthaus of Taylorville, IL and Patrick (LaVerne) Holthaus of Pana, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Paul, Ted, and Matthew Schnaare, William and Christopher Relken, Kerry and Layne Quam.
