Jeannette Scriver Burch, 89, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died on March 14, 2009, at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
She was born on January 6, 1920, in Northfield, the daughter of Arthur T. and Katherine (Lee) Scriver. The family moved to Cannon Falls in 1921, where she lived for most of her life. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carlton College and then taught high school English and history as well as serving as school librarian for two years in northern Minnesota. She married John W. Burch on April 26, 1943, while he was in the U.S. army. After WWII ended, they lived in Minneapolis for a year and then returned to Cannon Falls. They had two children and sponsored the first foreign exchange student in Cannon Falls. They also were foster parents for a boy and two girls.
Jeannette worked in the First National Bank with her father for five years, carrying on a family banking tradition. She substituted in the high schools of Cannon Falls and Randolph for ten years while volunteering part time as librarian for the Cannon Falls Library. When the library was enlarged and moved, she worked full time before retiring after 20 years of service. Her hobbies were "collecting grandparents" (genealogy), playing the piano and organ, reading, painting, ceramics, and writing. She published two books, A Schryver/Scriver Genealogy and A Scriver Saga. She was chairman of the committee that published the Chronicles of Cannon Falls and she wrote several articles for the Cannon Falls Beacon and the Goodhue County Historical News. She also wrote poetry for family members for every occasion and short stories of life in the days gone by. She received the "WCCO Good Neighbor Award" in August 1977.
Jeannette was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church of Cannon Falls, where she was the Church organist for more than 35 years. She sang in and directed the choir, taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent, and Church historian. She was a member of various church organizations, the Tuesday Club, The Daughters of the American Revolution and served on the Goodhue County Historical Society Board.
Jeannette was not very outgoing, but the friends she made, she made for life. She had a good sense of humor and enjoyed making puns. She enjoyed traveling and looking for distant relatives ~ alive and not. She enjoyed being with family, especially at the family cottage on Lake Minnetonka.
