Jean Martenson

September 16, 1925 — February 8, 2009

Jean Elaine Martenson of Vasa, passed on to new life on February 8, 2009 at the Cannon Falls Hospital at the age of 83.

She was born in Belle Creek Township to Clarence and Ellen (Fredrickson) Erickson on September 16, 1925. She spent most of early childhood in Cannon Falls where she attended elementary school. The family then moved to a farm near Vasa. At age 14, Jean began caring for her parents and 3 brothers due to her mother’s illness. In her late teen years she worked as a waitress in the Twin Cities and as a nurse’s aide at St. John’s Hospital in Red Wing.

She married Lloyd Martenson on September 1, 1945 at Vasa Lutheran Church and began her life as a farm wife and mother until the time of her death. She was a member of Vasa Lutheran Church and was involved in WELCA and circle meetings. She had been a member of the White Rock Project Group for many years. She loved to laugh and tease. She was a good cook and always ready to feed visitors including farm workers, salesmen and repairmen on the farm. Many city relatives spent weekends and summer days on the farm. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the best. She treasured visits and phone calls. As she became more homebound and her body weakened, the phone contact with neighbors and friends became so important. She will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister Clarice and bothers Conroe and Claire Erickson. She is survived by her husband Lloyd, son Duane of Vasa and daughter Diane (Karl) Lunder of Hinckley, MN. She has 3 grandchildren, Eric (Ellen Parker) Lunder of St. Paul, Matthew (Brigid) Lunder of Mount Lake Terrace, WA, and Rachel Johnson of Tyler, MN. and 5 great- grandchildren Luke and Anthony Johnson, Maria and Samuel Lunder and Leo Lunder. Her brother Warren Erickson lives in Bemus Point, NY. She has many nieces, nephews and friends including her special puppy friends, Tyler and Rusty.

Pallbearers will be Clayton Barghusen, Craig Barghusen, Bruce Nadeau, Doug Erickson, LeRoy Erickson and Todd Erickson.

Visitation will be 5-8 pm. Friday at Lundberg Funeral Home and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 pm. Saturday February 14, 2009 at Vasa Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Dobbins officiating. Burial will be in the Vasa Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to Vasa Lutheran Church.
