Irven Oliver Rustad
Irven Oliver Rustad, age 85, died Friday evening January 18, 2008 in the Angels Care Center, Cannon Falls, surrounded by his loving family.
Irven was born May 31, 1922 the son of Iver O. and Christine (Erie) Rustad in Canby, MN. He lived in Canby until he was 11 years old when the family moved to a farm in the Kenyon area and later to a farm in the Nanson area and eventually purchased a hobby farm in the Sogn area. Irven was a cheesemaker for Arco Dairies before being drafted into the United States Navy in 1943. After boot camp at Camp Farragut, Idaho, he went to Port Hueneme, CA for infantry training, not your typical Navy assignment. Irven?s next stop was San Bruno, CA where he was assigned to ?L.I.O.N. 4?, land invasion operation Navy Group. In May 1944 Irven boarded the HMS Bloemfontein, a converted Dutch Cargo ship and was headed to the Admiralty Islands, north of New Guinea. This is where a new base was to be built; it was considered the most important Navel base in the Pacific Theater. After being discharged on May 24, 1946, Irven returned home and worked at the Hader Cheese Factory, where he worked before the war. He then worked out of Arco Dairies in Pine Island and eventually became the plant manager at Sogn. At the same time he was going to Red Wing Vo-Tech at night for machine shop. When finished with school, he went to work for Sargent Industries. He retired after 20 years. In 1949, Irven married the former Darlene Ims at the Urland Lutheran Church. This marriage would be blessed with three children, Richard, Leslie and Beverlee. Irven and Darlene would move to Cannon Falls where they would raise their children. Irven was an avid sportsman and loved to hunt and fish. He was a Scoutmaster for several years and had been president of the Sportsman?s Club. He had also been president of the PTA in the 60?s. He was a member of St. Ansgar?s Lutheran Church and had served on the church council.
Irven is lovingly survived by his wife of 58 years Darlene; his children Richard of Prior Lake, Leslie of Burnsville and Beverlee of Eden Prairie. Also by one sister Olive Rustad of Cannon Falls.
