Irene Margaret Dankers, age 95, a longtime resident of Goodhue, died on Saturday evening, December 30, 2006 at Zumbrota Health Services. Irene was born at home in Florence Township, MN, the daughter of William and Margaret (Wohlers) Thimijan. She graduated from 8th grade in 1926 from Goodhue County Rural School District #93.
Irene married Harvey M. Dankers on September 4, 1929 in West Florence. They lived in rural Lake City, until moving to the farm northeast of Goodhue. In 1959, they moved in to Goodhue, and resided there until 1993 when they moved to Red Wing. Her husband, Harvey died in November, 1995. Irene was a homemaker, and known for her needlework. She exhibited the items she had crocheted, tatted, sewed, cooked, baked or canned for many years at the Cannon Valley Fair, Goodhue County Fair, and the Minnesota State Fair. She won countless ribbons over the years for her handiwork. She was also a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Goodhue, where she had been involved with the ladies aid. She is survived by her children, Lorraine (Glen) Brown of Cottage Grove, Glen (Margaret) Dankers and LaVerne (Margaret) Dankers, all of Goodhue; 8 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; half brothers, Richard Thimijan of College Park, Maryland and Lawrence Thimijan of McConnells, South Carolina; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harvey; infant son, Louis; great-granddaughter, Hannah Gerber; brother, Loyd Thimijan; and two sisters, Frances Steffenhagen and Lucille Steffenhagen. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 702 - 3rd Ave., in Goodhue, with Pastor Randall Kuznicki officiating. Interment will follow at the Old West Florence Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday from 10-11 a.m. AT THE CHURCH. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Gary Brown, Bruce, Steven and Roger Dankers and grandsons-in-law, David Pemble, John Bremer, Dan Schwartau and Hill Gerber.
