Harvey Clayton Sumner, age 94 of Cannon Falls, died on Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2014 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems - Cannon Falls. Harvey was born on March 31, 1920 in Leon Township, the son of Paul and Mamie (Holien) Sumner. He married Irene Daniels on December 28, 1940 at Cresco, Iowa. Harvey worked in concrete construction, building blocks and constructing silo and corn cribs. He was part owner in the Cannon Falls Ready Mix and Silo Repair Company. He sold out to Westerman Lumber Company, where he continue working for 12 years. He also worked at the Cannon Falls Police Department for about 15 years, retiring in 1983. Harvey was a lifelong member of First English Lutheran Church, where he was baptized, confirmed and a church council member for many years. He served with the Merchant Marines during WW II, and was a life member of the VFW Nelson Scofield Post #4452. He was a member of the Masonic Oriental Lodge #34, serving as Past Master. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Zion Chapter #6, serving as Past Matron. Harvey and Irene shared their married life of over 73 years together, enjoying camping, fishing, and traveling. They loved spending time with family and enjoyed playing cards. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Irene; son, Harvey B. "Buzzy" (Donna) Sumner of Jonesboro, LA; grandson, Mark (Jessie) Sumner of Livingston, MT; two great grandchildren, Kyra and Jeremy; and nieces and nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roland, Keith and Philip Sumner; and four sisters, Marlin Gunderson, Beulah Shair, Wanda Peterson and Yvonne Peck. A Masonic service will be held on Friday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 2:00 p.m., with visitation from 1-2 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. Interment with military honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mark and Jeremy Sumner, Dick Houghton, Blaine Husbyn, Mike Bohen and Ron Paulson. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
