Glenn Alfred Swanson, age 93 of Lansdowne, Virginia and formerly of Cannon Falls, died of complications related to a head injury on Friday, April 4, 2008 at the Renaissance Gardens at Greenspring in Springfield, Virginia.
Mr. Swanson was born on August 1, 1914 in Cannon Falls, the son of Algot and Esther (Johnson) Swanson, and was raised there. He attended St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. His early work in the banking field led to employment with the Civil Service of the State of Minnesota. During World War II, he served four years with the U.S. Navy, relying on his background in the Civil Service field. Following World War II, he worked with the Veterans Administration in Minneapolis, concentrating on government financing issues. In 1963, he was transferred to the Small Business Administration (SBA) in Washington, D.C. In this position, he served as a senior development coordinator, having prime responsibility for credit undertaken by the Area Development Administration and Economic Development Administration. He also served as a member of the Inter-Agency Adjustment Committee, seeking to alleviate the impact of bases subject to closure. During his tenure with SBA, he was actively engaged in all aspects of rural development, working closely with the banking community and state development programs. To facilitate community development, he was instrumental in preparing a "Handbook on Community Development",in cooperation with the Georgia Institute of Technology. After 30 years with the Federal Government, he resigned and began working with the Independent Bankers Association in Washington, D.C. This work embraced a broad range of banking functions designed to preserve small banking institutions.
Mr. Swanson was a much loved resident of "Leisure World",a retirement community in Lansdowne, Virginia. His friendly and outgoing spirit, in addition to his enthusiastic participation in a wide range of activities, made him a well-known and highly respected figure within the community.
Glenn was a longtime member of the Masonic Oriental Lodge #34 in Cannon Falls.
His wife, Martha McDonald Shelton Swanson, died on December 11, 2004. Three children and six grandchildren survive him. Children include Margaret Doucette and husband Edmund Doucette of Centerville, Ohio; Sharon Swanson and husband Larry Gough of Oakton, Virginia; and William Swanson of Reston, Virginia.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Gary Schulz officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church from 1-2 p.m.
Memorials are preferred to St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Glenn's name.
