George L. Goudy, age 88, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died on Friday morning, January 23, 2009 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
George was born on October 24, 1920 in Stanton Township, the son of George H. and Selma (Hanson) Goudy. He attended rural country school, and worked in Cannon Falls until he went to serve with the US Army during World War II. He served in the China Burma India Theater from September 16, 1942 until his honorable discharge on December 24, 1945.
He married Arline “Gert” Holm on May 8, 1947 at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where he continued an active membership.
Starting in the 1950’s, and continuing until his retirement, George owned and operated Goudy’s Gas and Appliance Repair in Cannon Falls. He also drove school bus for 28 years. In 1966, he built and operated the car wash on the north end of Cannon Falls.
He was a member of the VFW Nelson Scofield Post #4452 in Cannon Falls. He was also an active member of the CBI veterans group.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, including traveling with his wife, attending his grandchildren’s activities, and hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Selma Goudy; his wife, Gert on April 14, 1998; an infant son; and sisters, Bernie Benson, Doris Nelson, and Hazelle Flom.
He is survived by his children, Mick (Cheryl) of Monticello, Craig (Julie) of Minneapolis, and Ann (Stewart) Johnson of Woodbury; nine grandsons, Bryan, Jeffrey and Todd Goudy, Sean (Heather), Pat and Rob Goudy, Erik, Bjorn and Brett Johnson; great-grandchildren, Sophie and Grant Goudy; sister, Bette Quinnell of Northfield; brother-in-law, Larry Benson of Cannon Falls; special friend, Lenore Rapp of Cannon Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 27 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy 19 Blvd, Cannon Falls, with Pastor Gary Schulz and Pastor Carol Sinykin officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the church. There will also be visitation at the church on Tuesday from 12-1 p.m.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church.
Active pallbearers will be his nine grandsons.
