Gene W. Mills, age 75 of Ogema, MN and formerly of Cannon Falls, died on Wednesday morning, July 11, 2007 at Merit Pallative Care in Fargo, North Dakota.
Gene was born on March 24, 1932 in Cannon Falls, Minnesota to Lewis "Lars" and Victoria "Vic" (Munson) Mills. He grew up and graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1950 and in 1953 joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the service, he attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis for one year.
On February 25, 1956 he married Janet M. Miller in Cannon Falls. They lived in Albert Lea, Minnesota and Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he worked as a fertilizer salesman. They then moved to Cannon Falls, where he was employed by Minnesota Grain Pearling Company for 39 years. In 1966 he transferred to East Grand Forks, MN and retired in 1995. They moved to Strawberry Lake in 1997 (rural Ogema).
Gene served as Commander of the V.F.W. in Cannon Falls. He was a former member of the First English Church in Cannon Falls and a foster parent in both Cannon Falls and East Grand Forks. He was a member of the Redevelopment & Housing Authority in East Grand Forks, and was a part of the mentor for boys program in Detroit Lakes. His favorite pastimes were deer hunting, snowmobiling and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Mills of Ogema; son, Roy (Jennifer) Mills of Glenwood, Minnesota; daughters, Marilyn (Kenton) McGregor of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Ruth (Dennis) Kreun of Manvel, North Dakota, and Marty (Jeff) Veo-Wilson of Solway, Minnesota; 6 grandsons, Christopher Flaa, Michael Mills, Tyler, Gavin, Ryan, and Kameron McGregor; 1 great grandson, Mason Mills; and 1 great-granddaughter, Kennady Mills.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lars and Vic Mills; sister, Marilyn Marie Mills; and son-in-law, Dale Veo.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at the Lund Lutheran Church, 25213 County Hwy 21, Detroit Lakes #218-847-9662, with Pastor Eric Lemonholm officiating.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 ? 4:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m., at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. There will also be visitation 1 hour prior to the service at church.
Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks, MN.
Casketbearers will be Christopher Flaa, Michael Mills, Tyler McGregor, Gavin McGregor, Ryan McGregor and Kameron McGregor.
