Gary L. Chapman, age 67 of Cannon Falls, MN and formerly of Waubay, SD, passed away at his home on Monday, January 3, 2011, with his wife, Lois, at his side. He was known to friends as "Chappy," to family as a story and joke teller, and to everyone he met as a genuine, caring man. Gary was born at home on July 29, 1943 in Waubay, SD, the son of Delbert and Violet (Holscher) Chapman. He attended Waubay High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Lois L. Rumpca. They married on June 27, 1964. They lived in California, then moved to Minnesota, settling in Cannon Falls 40 years ago.
Gary was employed by the Torit Corporation of St. Paul for many years and later for over 25 years at the Amesbury Group of Cannon Falls. Gary was a member of St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, and a longtime member of the Cannon Falls Golf Club. He enjoyed golf, playing in pool league, traveling, and hunting. Gary had a passion for fresh and saltwater fishing, and loved spending time with his family at their cabin on Baby Lake in Hackensack, MN. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, and loved attending their sporting and music events. Gary is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lois; his children, Tamara Chapman of Cannon Falls, Robert (Julie) Chapman of Farmington, and Christopher (Angela) Chapman of Rosemount; six grandchildren, Sam White, Graison Hensley-Chapman, Brayden and Alexa Chapman, Brandon and Logan Chapman; three sisters, LaVonne Karcher of Hayward, CA, Shirley Rumpza of Webster, SD and Marlys (Florian) Pischke of Watertown, SD; half sister, Charlotte "Kaye" Carlisle of Littleton, CO; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many loving in-laws. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and half brother, Delbert "Butch" Chapman. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 6 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, with Father Leonard Siebenaler celebrating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Robert Chapman, Christopher Chapman, Graison Hensley-Chapman, Larry Rumpca, Loren Rumpca and Lee Rumpca. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, Sam White, Brayden and Alexa Chapman, Brandon and Logan Chapman.
