Gary Lee Benson, age 67, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died peacefully at home on Sunday morning, October 3, 2010. Gary was born on July 30, 1943 in Red Wing, the son of Ellwood H. and Marian E. (Johnson) Benson. He graduated from the Cannon Falls High School in 1961, and married Margene L. Lindell on October 26, 1962 at Spring Garden Lutheran Church. Gary had been employed with Iverson Block, Lamperts Lumber Yard, Kimmes Construction, Hastings Redimix, Standard Building Material, and 25 years with Cemstone Products, retiring in 2007. He was also a part-time farmer for the duration of his life. He was a lifelong member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. He enjoyed softball, golf, bowling, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, playing guitar, gardening, auctions - especially listening to cattle auctions on the internet, going to horse sales, and watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events and showing cattle. He was the happiest when he could spend time with his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends. He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Margene; four children, Craig (Lori) and Daniel (Mary), all of Cannon Falls, Sarah (John) Samuelson of Waunakee, WI, and Julie (Cory) Knowlton of Mazeppa; 12 grandchildren, Jenifer, Patty, Brandon, Elizabeth, Emily and Michael Benson, Jack, GeorgiaRae and Gabriel Samuelson, Ben, Samuel, and Gabrielle Knowlton; brother, Darryl (Becki) Benson of Clarkfield, MN; sister, Kathleen (Jim) McCarthy of Flagstaff, AZ; nieces and nephews; aunt, Delores Callstrom of Red Wing; mother-in-law, Adeline Lindell of Cannon Falls; and many other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellwood and Marian Benson; and father-in-law, Willard Lindell. The visitation and funeral service will be held at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy 19 Blvd, Cannon Falls. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., with Pastor Gary Schulz officiating. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Craig and Daniel Benson, John Samuelson, Cory Knowlton, Jim Wollmering, and Curtis Duden. Honorary pallbearers will be Sarah Samuelson, Julie Knowlton, Lori Benson, Mary Benson, Jenifer Benson, Patty Benson, Elizabeth Benson, Emily Benson, Brandon Benson, Michael Benson, Ben Knowlton, Jack Samuelson, Samuel Knowlton, GeorgiaRae Samuelson, Gabrielle Knowlton, and Gabriel Samuelson, and the McCusker's Softball Team. Memorials are preferred to St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, Fairview Red Wing Hospice, or donor's choice.
