Fredrick William "Fred" Miller, age 67 of Cannon Falls, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday evening, July 27, 2011. Fred was born on April 20, 1944 in Minneapolis, MN. Along with his parents, Russell and Muriel (Boehm) Miller, he grew up in Princeton, MN and moved to Cannon Falls in 1955. He completed his education at Cannon Falls, and went on to serve honorably with the US Navy from 1961 until 1963. He later joined the US Army Reserve in 1974, and retired after 29 years of service. He married Karen Svien on November 8, 1962 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They had three children together, and many years later, they divorced. For most of his working career, he worked for the Department of the Army. He also worked in electronics and computers. He loved music and first started entertaining in 1964. The first band he started was Freddy and the Travel Ons. He continued playing and entertaining throughout his life! Fred led a complicated life, and came to sobriety in 1984. He married Susan A. Gruber on March 29, 1985 at the First English Lutheran Church. She died on January 29, 1993. Fred was a longtime member of the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where he helped with the music for the outdoor services for many years. He was also a member of the Kraft-Ostrom American Legion Post #142. Fred will be remembered most for his love of family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with all of them. He was an awesome storyteller, a person with drive and compassion, and a man with a great sense of humor. He will be missed... He is survived by his loving companion, Sharon Beske of Cannon Falls; children, Frank Miller, Kim Melhouse and Ferlin Miller, all of Cannon Falls; step-daughter, Dawn Schull of Owatonna; six grandchildren, Gunnar and Krisanna, Amber and Matthew, Tristan and Nathan; great-grandson, Caiden; stepmother, Katie Miller of Cannon Falls; brother, Duane (Cheryl) Hermanson of Cannon Falls; step brothers and step sisters, Randy (Barb) Miller of Cannon Falls, Marilyn (Tom) Falk of Blooming Prairie, Jim Larson and Dennis Larson, both of Cannon Falls, Gail (Terry) Wichser of Sterling, CO and Merlyn (Deb) Larson of Lakeville; half sisters, Lynette (Steve) Ragsdale of Branson, Missouri and Connie Krystofiak of Hopkins; half brother, Jerry Bergeron of Cambridge; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, twin Franklin Miller and Curtis Hermanson; wife, Susan; step brother, Gerald Larson; half brother, Rick Bergeron; and half sister, Delight Struck. Funeral service will be held on Monday, August 1 at 11:00 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church, with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Pastor Craig Ellingboe will provide the eulogy. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Monday from 10-11 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Matthew Melhouse, Gunnar Gustafson, Tristan Hoover, Brian Miller, Zachary Punches and Taylor Hermanson. Honorary pallbearers will be Nathan Schull, Amber Melhouse, Krisanna Gustafson and Caiden Walrod. Interment with full military honors will be on Wednesday, August 3 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
