Frances L. (Serres) Karnick, age 81 of Coates, MN, died on Saturday morning, October 16, 2010 at United Hospital in St. Paul, following a massive stroke on Sunday, October 10, 2010. On October 25, 1928, Frances L. Gergen was born at home in Hampton Township, the daughter of William M. and Teresa M. (Weiler) Gergen. She graduated from Randolph High School in 1947, and later enrolled in the nursing program at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul, where she formed lifelong friends. Franny, as she was known to her family and friends, married Gerald J. Serres on January 20, 1951 at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Hampton, MN. They farmed for many years in Hampton Township. She was a longtime member of St. Mathias Catholic Church in Hampton, where she had been active in St. Conrad's Circle. She and her husband had been married for over 32 years, when he died in June of 1983. Following his death, Franny moved to Hastings from the farm. She would later marry Irvin Karnick on January 24, 1997 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, MN. They were currently residing in Coates, MN where she was a member of St. Agatha's Catholic Church. Franny loved camping, fishing, playing cards, and traveling. She also loved the outdoors and birds. As she loved to socialize, she truly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of over 13 years, Irvin of Coates; her children, Randall J. (Jacqueline) Serres of Randolph, David J. (Charlotta) Serres of Prescott, WI, LuAnn (Carl) Gieschen of Randolph, Judy L. (Mark) Graves of Cottage Grove, and Jerry (Jill) Serres of Cannon Falls; eleven grandchildren, Brian (Tracy) Serres, Gina (Dustin) Kerr, Jason Serres (Kelly Hager), Stephanie Serres, Rachael (Jesse) Witt, Megan Gieschen (Jeff Backous), Kelly Gieschen, Garrett Graves, Elizabeth Graves, Sean Serres, and Allie Serres; three great-grandchildren, Masa Anne Kerr, Connor Lance Kerr, and Nolan Wayde Witt; Irvin's children, Linda (Tony) Burr of Hastings, Patty (Bruce) Frandrup of Hampton, Nancy Karnick of Hutchinson, and Raymond (Donna) Karnick of Hastings; grandchildren, Gary, Samantha and Shane Samuels, Kaitlyn and Kelsey Frandrup, Makayla, Haley, Sara and Nicholas Karnick; sister, Geraldine (Edmund) Plucinski of Gibbstown, New Jersey; brother, Paul A. (Shirley) Gergen of Randolph; sisters-in-law, Jacqualyn Gergen and Dolores Gergen, both of Cannon Falls; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald Serres; daughter, Mary Beth Serres; son, Ronald M. Serres; granddaughter, Cheryl Serres; sister, Mary Jane Schweich; and brothers, Edward Gergen, Ralph Henry Gergen, and William J. Gergen. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 20 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Hampton, with Father Paul Kubista and Father Marvin Klaers officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation on Wednesday at the church from 10-11 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Mark Graves, Carl Gieschen, Sean Serres, Garrett Graves, Jason Serres, and Jay Frandrup.
