Evelyn A. Shorter, 90 of Cannon Falls, passed away Friday evening, October 9, 2009 at the Cannon Falls Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Evelyn A. Shorter was born March 14, 1919 in Dodge County, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Knutson) Garnes. She grew up in Dodge County and was educated in country schools. She was united in marriage to Estel M. Shorter on March 29, 1938 in Kasson, MN. The couple made their home in the area on various farms and in 1952 moved to rural Cannon Falls and she became employed at Windy Acres. In 1957 they moved to Plainview, where Evelyn managed a restaurant for a couple of years, before returning to Cannon Falls in 1961. She retired from Mineral Springs, where she worked in the kitchen, in 1981 after 15 years of service. She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, the church circle. She was quite a seamstress, making many clothes and quilts for family throughout her life. She enjoyed playing cards, dice and was an avid Bingo fan.
She is survived by her children; Marlene (John) Nelson of Junction City, Oregon, Corrine Lange of Cannon Falls, Robert Shorter of Moose Lake, Kenneth (Judy) Shorter of Cushing, Donald (Carole) Shorter of Adrian, Richard (Kathy) Shorter & Thomas (Barb) Shorter of Cannon Falls, 18 grandchildren; Scott, Todd, Jeff, Julie, Michael, Patrick, Lynette, Monty, Travis, Tami, Gerald, Kevin, Chad, Beckie, Heidi, Chris, Jessica & Matt, 30 great-grandchildren & 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Estel, her sister, Irene, two brothers, Gerald & Kenneth, son-in-law, Larry Lange and great-grandson, Craig Shorter.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at First English Lutheran Church, 511 W. Belle Street in Cannon Falls with Pastors Phillip Ruud and Dan Forsgren, officiating. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in Dodge Center. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Lundberg Funeral Home, 5839 Hwy 19 Blvd. in Cannon Falls and one hour prior Wednesday at church.
Active pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Bradley Garnes, James Root, John Nelson and Michael Knodle.
