Eugene J Schiell, age 83, of Cannon Falls, went to be with the Lord on July 14th 2022, while surrounded by his family at his home in Cannon Falls. Gene was born in Sisseton So. Dakota to William and Selma (Rust) Schiell on April 16, 1939. He was the youngest of eight children. At a young age Gene’s family moved to Cannon Falls, where they farmed for many years. He went to school in Cannon Falls and So. St. Paul, where his parents managed the Coats Hotel. Gene joined the Navy at age of 17 and received an honorable discharge.
Gene married Carol Glenn November 4, 1961. They had three children: Laurie, Bradley, and Douglas. Gene was a hard worker. He had a painting business for many years. Then Gene & Carol moved to California the early 1980’s due to Gene’s severe arthritis. There he managed a ranch in Fremont until he retired. They moved back to Cannon Falls in 2008.
Gene enjoyed spending time with his family traveling, hunting, camping, fishing, playing guitar and singing. He belonged to a Bluegrass band “Down Home” for a number of years. Gene was very loved.
Gene is survived by his wife Carol, his children Laurie (Mike) Farrell of Wanamingo, Bradley (Ellen) of Welch, and Douglas (and special friend Reina) of Albert Lea; ten grandchildren: Justine (Michael) Boulton of Wanamingo, Ryan (Claudia) Friedrich of Germany, Christopher (Maddie) of Farmington, Sarah Parrott of Apple Valley, Rachel (Cole) Smith of Utah, Erik (Maddie) Schiell of Seattle, Chris Farrell of Red Wing, and Alycia Frandle (Kegan) of Blue Earth; five great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Victoria, Rorik , Amelia, and Carson; sisters Marcy Knoblauch of Cannon Falls and Sara Jane Schiell of Maple Lake MN; sister-in-law Faye of Stillwater; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wenzel, sister Gladys and husband Arnold Sundheim, brother Herman and wife Elsie, brother William and wife Gerry, and brother Hubert and his wife Betty.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday July 18th at Wangen Prairie Lutheran Church, 34289 Co. 24 Blvd, Cannon Falls, MN 55009. Visitation will be two hours before the funeral at the church. Burial with military honors will be at Wangen Prairie Cemetery. Arrangements by Lundberg funeral home in Cannon Falls.
