Ernest Leo "Ernie" Baum, age 82 of Cannon Falls and formerly of Benson, died on Sunday afternoon, June 27, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
Ernie was born on February 20, 1928 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Ernest Leo and Elma (Reilly) Baum. He grew up in Quincy, IL and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Leona Johanson of Benson on July 15, 1967, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. They moved to Cannon Falls in 1973 and resided there together until Leona’s passing on April 28, 1990. He worked as a carpenter for many years as a part of Carpenter’s Local #87, until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, and formerly a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. He was a Life Member of the VFW. He enjoyed bicycle riding, participating in the Multiple Sclerosis TRAM ride for many years. He also enjoyed building two-seater airplanes, working on cars and spending time with his dogs. He met his fiancée, Hannah Braatz in 1993 and they continued their partnership until his death.
He is survived by his best friend and fiancée Hannah Braatz of Cannon Falls, and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughters, Gwen Dunlap and Sherry Baum both of Norwalk, OH; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Vincent of Quincy, IL; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona; brother, Paul; and sisters, Lorraine and Sally.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 2 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Carol Sinykin officiating. Interment will follow at the Benson City Cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 1 from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be a visitation at the church on Friday one hour prior.
Memorials are preferred to St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church.
Active pallbearers will be Will, Brad and Matt Bimson, Mike Kirham, Mike Clark, Bill Saylor, Donald Sheets, and Bob Beckman. Honorary pallbearers will be his remaining nieces and nephews, and Hannah’s children.
