Emma Clara Christiansen, age 101, died in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Northfield Care Center – Cardinal Unit in Northfield. It was a beautiful snowy overnight. Emma was born in Sac County, Iowa on December 9, 1911, the second of five children to Otto and Bertha (Krenzien) Putbrese. She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant grandson, Timothy Sanders; her husband, Glen (1907-1982); and siblings, Raymond, Ida Bruns, Lucy Ritter, and Lawrence. Emma married Glen D. Christiansen in Odebolt, IA on March 15, 1936. They raised three daughters in Iowa before moving to a farm near New Trier in 1956. Emma worked at Smeads Manufacturing in Hastings for nine years. She enjoyed spending her free time quilting, crocheting, gardening and playing cards, especially "500." Throughout the years, her daughters enjoyed and remember the many skirts their mother sewed for them. After moving off the farm in the 1980's, she had a new home built in Cannon Falls and lived there until she moved to Northfield Retirement Center (NRC) – Manor Apartments in 2003. Heartfelt thanks to the NRC and especially the staff of the Care Center's Cardinal Unit for their care of Emma. She is survived by her daughters, Karleen (Richard) Sanders of Early, IA, Janice Massey of Shoreview, and Myra (Arnold) Radman of Randolph. She is also survived by grandchildren, Stuart (Jody) Sanders, Christine (Paul) Massey-Bierman, Marco Massey-Christensen, Clare (James) Massey Sokup, William (Aimee) Radman, Andrew (Larisa) Radman, and Sara (Lee) Radman Orvik; and by 12 great-grandchildren. Private family graveside services were held for Emma at Cannon Falls Cemetery. We all wish we could hear grandma sing "Ramona" one more time!
