Elsie Laura Tilderquist, age 86 of Minneapolis, died on Thursday evening, March 8, 2007 at the Providence Place in Minneapolis.
Elsie was born at home in Vasa on January 31, 1921, the daughter of T. Lawrence and Selma (Johnson) Tilderquist. She grew up in the Vasa area, and attended rural country school, District 15, as well as Calhoun School (sight-saving classes) in Minneapolis. She was a lifetime member of the Vasa Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. She graduated from the Cannon Falls High School in 1940, and attended one year at the Faribault School for the Blind.
Elsie was legally blind her entire life, but that did not hinder her in living a full life! After graduating from high school, she opened a vending stand in the lobby of St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She operated that for 12 years. She moved from Duluth to Minneapolis, where she continued to operate vending stands at the Highway Building and the State Capitol in St. Paul, the Minneapolis Federal Building, and others in the Twin Cities area.
She enjoyed traveling with her sister, Marian. Her travels brought her to Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Europe, and several times to Sweden. She has also gone on a boat cruise from Florida to the Panama Canal Zone, including the Virgin Islands. She also enjoyed bowling with her friends, and had opportunities to participate in tournaments around the United States. Elsie had also traveled to many parts of the U.S. with the National Church Conference of the Blind.
Elsie was an active member of the Lutheran Braille Evangelism Association, the United Blind of Minnesota, and the Minnesota Christian Fellowship of the Blind. She had served on their boards and planning committees for many years.
Elsie was a cheerful one, and always had something positive and good to say. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her!
Her brother, Conley Tilderquist preceded her in death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and niece, Barbara Tilderquist.
She is survived by her sisters, Marian Tilderquist of Minneapolis and Iva (Robert) Kvam of San Leandro, CA; sister-in-law, Jean Tilderquist of Vasa; nephews and nieces, Maurice Tilderquist of Wanamingo, Bruce (Kathy) Tilderquist of Cannon Falls, Paul Tilderquist of Vasa, Sandra (Tom) Barlow, Allen and Richard Kvam, all of California, and Karen (Rod) Vance of Canada; and many other relatives and friends.
