Eleanor V. Thorne, age 93, a current resident of The View in Cannon Falls and formerly of St. Paul, died early morning on Friday, September 19, 2008 at the Cannon Falls Medical Center.
Eleanor was born on August 9, 1915 in Harmony, MN, the daughter of Carlus and Blanche (Hellickson) Selvig. She graduated from Harmony High School in 1933, and from the University of Minnesota College of Education in 1937.
Eleanor was an elementary school teacher her entire life. She taught most of her years at Galtier Elementary School in St. Paul, after teaching a few years in Lake Bluff, IL and Ironwood, MI. She also worked part-time in the credit department at Montgomery Ward for many years.
In 1947, she married Arver Thorne, whom she had met while both were teaching school in Ironwood, and after Arver had returned from serving in the U.S. Air Force in England during WWII. Arver and Eleanor were married for almost 60 years, when he passed away in 2007.
She is survived by her niece, Mary Althoff of Seattle, WA; nephews, John (Phyllis) Althoff and Jim (Debbie) Althoff, both of Cannon Falls; and four grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and by her sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Oliver Althoff.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the First English Lutheran Church, 511 W. Belle St. in Cannon Falls.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the First English Lutheran Church.
Interment will take place at Sunset Cemetery in Minneapolis.
