Elaine Marion Nelson, age 84, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, May 20, 2010 at the Northfield Care Center surrounded by her family.
Elaine was born on September 7, 1925 in Vasa Township, the daughter of Rutherford and Blanche (Lindell) Lundell.
She married DeVere F. Nelson on September 30, 1944 in Alexandria, Louisiana. After raising their children, she worked at the Mineral Springs Sanatorium, Hi-Quality Bakery, owned and operated the Cannon Drive In, Cannon Falls Nursing Home, and the Cannon Falls Chamber of Commerce. Following her retirement, she volunteered in the activities department at the nursing home.
Elaine and DeVere wintered in Mission, Texas for many years after they retired. They spent much of their summers at their lake cabin in Brainerd, where they loved to entertain their children and grandchildren.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, watching birds, the outdoors, and loved the MN State Fair. She was a member of St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, and was a charter member of the Cannon Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, DeVere on December 9, 1995; son-in-law, John Middaugh; brother, Wayne Lundell; and sister, Regina Budensiek.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Middaugh of Minneapolis, Donna (Larry) Nelson of Boerne, Texas, Jane (Michael) Bethel of Northfield, and John (Audrey Anderson) Nelson of Sogn Valley; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Melvin (Donna) Lundell, Dale Lundell, and Jean (Curt) Duden, all of Cannon Falls; sisters-in-law, Ione Lundell of Cannon Falls and Lola Nelson of Vasa; brothers-in-law, Floyd Budensiek of Cannon Falls and Sterling (Grace) Nelson of Vasa; aunts, LaMyra Sumner of South Prairie, WA, Bernice Hedstrom, Irene Lundell and Lois Lundell, all of Cannon Falls; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy 19 Blvd, Cannon Falls, with Pastors Gary Schulz and Pastor Carol Sinykin officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 26 from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home, 5839 Hwy 19 Blvd, Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Thursday from 10-11 a.m. Memorials are preferred to St. Ansgar’s Cemetery Fund or donor’s choice.
Active pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Justin and Jenna Middaugh, Amy Pickar, Joe, Robb and Cody Lopez, Aaron and Adam Nelson, Naomi Olson, Claire Bethel, Amanda Rose, and Bennett Nelson. Honorary pallbearers will be her Godchildren, Beverly Lundell, Sondra Samos, Leanne Bergstrom, Roger Nelson and Guy Stein.
Interment with VFW Auxiliary honors will take place at a later date at the St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Cemetery in Cannon Falls.
