Edythe Evelyn Beckman, age 82, a lifelong resident of the Cannon Falls area, died on Saturday May 12, 2007 at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park in Red Wing.
Edythe was born at home in Vasa Township on September 2, 1924, the daughter of Edmond A. and Emma M. (Peterson) Beckman. She graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1941, and took one year of Normal teacher's training. She taught nine years in country schools, all 8 grades, and then returned to Winona Teacher College for two years to get her four-year degree. She taught two years in St. Charles and thirty years in Farmington, teaching first graders to read and write.
She had been teacher of the year at Farmington, retiring in 1981 to the farm, the woods and the flowers she enjoyed, at Cannon Falls.
Edythe was a lifelong member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She was also active in the Mary Martha Circle.
Edythe was a life-member of the Goodhue County Historical Society, where she did research. She was also a member and former board member of the Cannon Falls Historical Society.
Edythe had been a 4H leader, a Delta Kappa Gamma member, member of the Cloverdale Extension Group, and a member of the Rural Teacher's Association and the Southeastern Minnesota Teacher's Association.
She loved to travel, and enjoyed her trip to Texas and the Ozarks. Her dream trip, which she relived many times, was to Sweden and Norway!
Marie Benson of Red Wing was a longtime friend, who was very loyal and visited her daily at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park. Also, Nick and Donna Otto were special friends. They would help her with many projects and also help her at the nursing home. She referred to Donna as the daughter she never had.
Edythe is survived by her brother, Gordon Beckman (special friend, Kay Peterson) of Cannon Falls; and sister-in-law, Verna Beckman of Anoka.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmond and Emma Beckman; and her twin brothers, Alton and Vernon Beckman.
